Background on the Hate Crimes Vigil:
Equality Florida, Wire Magazine and Unity Coalition organized the Hate Crimes Vigil in response to the recent brutal murders
of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado and Jason Mattison. Please join us this Wednesday night as we gather to shine a spotlight
on the growing violence here in Florida.
Openly gay 19-year old Jorge was found burned, beaten, dismembered and decapitated on November 13th, in central Puerto
Rico. Juan Martinez Matos, 25, has confessed to the murder and appears to be planning a "gay panic" defense.
15-year old Jason Mattison was found raped and stabbed to death in Baltimore.
The Federal Hate Crimes law passage has not slowed the murders of LGBT people. Hate violence against LGBT Floridians
has grown 33% year after year in Florida in the most violent categories - what the FBI calls overkill.

WORLD AIDS DAY | Tues. Dec 1st | MIAMI BEACH
Men Initiating Action & Mobilization for Impactful Change (aka M-I-A-M-I, composed of Office of HIV/ AIDS staff and community-
based partners including Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida, Ambiente Magazine, South Beach AIDS Project, Union Positiva,
University of Miami, Care Resource, Pridelines, and Jackson Hospital ) is planning a community event with the City of Miami
Beach Mayor’s Office, on Lincoln Rd. and Washington Ave. for World AIDS Day on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 from 5pm-

We are focusing on addressing the community on stigma and its affects on the gay community and making stigma,
homophobia, and discrimination central themes during the event.
